The Health Human Resource Development Bureau (HHRDB) is launching an RHM Placement Program. Mechanics are similar to the Doctor to the Barrio (DTTB) Program, in that we hire licensed Rural Health Midwives (RHMs) willing to serve areas in need. As such, the previously identified 25 low performing municipalities/provinces, which was the basis of recruiting midwifery scholarship applicants, will be the same 25 sites where we are deploying our licensed RHMs.

GARANTISADONG PAMBATA TAKES OFF!
Twice a year during the months of April and October, the Department of Health since 1999 has held a week-long nationwide program to provide comprehensive health services for pre-schoolers. This year’s theme for Garantisadong Pambata is “GP8 Child Survival Package-Kids Can’t Wait’. The focus of this campaign is to provide the essential health services as specified in the Child Survival Strategy in order to accelerate and sustain action towards reaching Millennium Development Goal 4: Reduce Child Mortality. Regional Director Dr. Lydia S. Depra-Ramos of the Department of Health CHD WV announced the enthusiastic readiness of all Local Government Units for Garantisadong Pambata 2008! The strategy of Garantisadong Pambata offers a unified direction and description of the action to successfully implement life saving interventions as it focuses on children from birth to 5 years of age. Other child health services include salt testing for iodine, growth monitoring and promotion/weighing, oral health and newborn screening.

Dengue Cases in Western Visayas (38th Morbidity Week)
A total of 5,445 dengue cases were admitted to different sentinel hospitals region wide from January 1 to September 22, 2007. This is 325% higher compared to same time period last year (1,282 cases). Cases had exceeded and reached the alert threshold from week 1 to present and had decreased on the 33rd week. (Figure 1).

Dengue Cases in Western Visayas (36th Morbidity Week)
Findings:
A total of 4,482 Dengue cases were admitted from the different sentinel sites of Western Visayas from January 1 to September 8, 2006. This is 297% higher compared to same period last year of 1,129 cases (Fig 1). Ages of cases ranged from 2 months to 79 years old (median 10 years). Fifty one percent( 51%) were males. Cases were highest below the 10 years age group [Fig 2]. There were fifty six deaths recorded (CFR 1.2%).

DENGUE CASES IN WESTER VISAYAS (35TH MORBIDITY WEEK)
Partial data from the Regional Epidemiology and Surveiilance Unit (RESU) shows a total of 4,143 Dengue Cases from the 15 sentinel sites regionwide covering the period January 1 to September 1, 2007 (Fig. 1). Most of the cases were from Iloilo and Negros Occidental province and some of its component cities (Tab. 1).
